In order to determine a first understanding of what the Memorial should reflect, to facilitate the work of the members of the symposium, to provide them with avenues of reflection and to give them an overview of representations and ideas generated today by the Great War in New Zealand, in 2015 the Embassy of France in New Zealand collected the feelings, ideas and stories that some New Zealanders associate with the First World War, France and New Zealand. Data was gathered through a questionnaire and the answers helped to produce a summary note – the first raw material for the design of the memorial.
